sleep with the fishes | marble, alabaster, concrete | 2024

funded by deaf explorer, this was a commission to create a piece on the theme of environmental destruction. It was carved out of another unfinished marble sculpture that was given to me by a friend. based on a galapagos penguin, an endangered species which numbers only a few thousand. true survivors, they’ve come though a lot. will they survive us?

disposable series | plastic bottle | alabaster | 2020There are an estimated FIVE TRILLION pieces of plastic in our oceans. Do you know how much five trillion is? I don’t. I can’t imagine it.About 8.3 billion tonnes of plastic has been produced since the 1950s, and only 9% of it has been recycled. Recycle your stuff.

blinded by technology | limestone | 2020 | private collection

obvious. frustration at my children’s addiction to tech, and the fact that we’re all so utterly reliant on phones and computers. how would anything work if we lost them?

get up and fly! | marble | 2020The bird represents a huge portion of the (younger, working class) population in the UK who are told they can be anything they want to be if they just buckle down and work hard™️, but in reality are met with obstacles in every direction. Like a bird kicked out of its nest with no means of flight, they’re fucked from the start.I live in a society where I’m stuck paying £900 a month in rent because the bank says I can’t afford to pay £450 a month in mortgage payments. Instead, I’ve got to live with my landlord’s shitty choice of carpet and pay off his mortgage. Punishing poor people for being poor needs to stop.

boomers and banks have bought all the houses. you can’t get a mortgage, and they’re putting up the rent.

Shark Attack 1| marble | 2020 | private collectionMost people would say they’re at least a little bit afraid of sharks. I mean if you’re swimming in the ocean, it’s got to be in your top five list of things you’d rather not meet. Most of us would say we’re actually terrified of them. In 2020, there were 129 incidents (worldwide) of sharks biting humans. That’s a very low number, out of seven billion people. Only 59 of those bites were unprovoked. And it’s not as if sharks walk around in Tesco biting people. You have to be in the ocean or very close to it to get bitten. On average, 100 MILLION sharks are killed by humans each year. Mostly for shark fin soup. Sometimes, they’re not even killed outright. They have their fins cut off before being thrown back in the sea to die slowly. Why are we like this?

small d deaf/the inside of my ear | marble | 2021

i can’t hear you | alabaster | 2020I was born with severe-profound hearing loss into a (wonderful) family of hearing people, and I hated being deaf. My family were forbidden to even say the word “deaf”. Every day of my life I wear these uncomfortable, ugly things in my ears to appear “normal”. I’m so good at pretending that I even fooled myself. Now I’m wondering...why should I? Why am I fighting so hard to fit in to the world around me as a hearing person? It’s exhausting and demoralising. Maybe it’s time to stop being ashamed of being different, and embrace it instead. It’s not a loss, but a gift. Because even with hearing aids I miss a lot, so my eyes see everything. I can notice and memorise shapes and movements and tiny details that mean I’m able to replicate them in stone like this without any training.I’m starting to appreciate the beauty of a silent world. I wouldn’t change it for anything. I’m happy with me.

shit sandwich | marble | 2020Yes, it’s an actual turd between two pieces of bread carved in marble. Yes, I know it’s disgusting.I made Shit Sandwich as a response to the horrific car crash that was life in America under Donald Trump. Despite being a despicable human being in his personal and business lives, he could still have made a decent president, surely? In case you’ve missed the news - he did not. Racism, xenophobia, homophobia all got worse. Healthcare got worse. International relations got worse. Wealth inequality, pollution, corruption, hatred and division. The coronavirus came along, and he just…let people die. About 200,000 of them. In fact, he actively helped some die directly by suggesting that drinking bleach could help. Here’s your shit sandwich, America. Eat it and smile for the camera.
